Planning, projection, preparation. In that order.
Most tax firms are organized around filing season. We are organized around the calendar year, and the return is the last thing we do — a confirmation that what we planned is what happened.
Tax planning
A standing engagement. You bring us the decision — an exercise, a property, a business change, a large gift, a sale — and we model it before you make it. Meetings happen when something is in front of you, not on a fixed schedule for its own sake. The retainer covers the year; the fee scales with the complexity of what we're managing, and the calculator on the pricing page shows exactly how.
Tax projection
A full-year projection built from actual year-to-date income while there is time to act on it. We size the Q4 estimate, adjust withholding, harvest losses against realized gains, confirm hour thresholds on rentals, size the ISO exercise, and decide what belongs in this year versus next. Anything that has to happen by year-end gets a date and an owner.
Tax preparation
Federal, state, and entity returns prepared by the same people who did the planning. Because we already have the hours logs, the cost segregation study, the 3921s, and the corrected basis, preparation is a confirmation step rather than a scramble. We prepare returns for planning clients only.
Tax and investment decisions are the same decision
Whether to exercise, whether to sell, how much to diversify, where to hold the rental's reserves — each of these has a tax answer and a portfolio answer, and they are frequently in tension. Our planning is coordinated with your broader financial plan so those answers are reconciled rather than made separately by people who don't talk to each other.
Financial planning and investment advice, where you want them, are provided under a separate engagement with an affiliated firm, with its own agreement and disclosures. The tax work stays here.
Mostly virtual, entirely deliberate
About nine in ten of our clients work with us remotely, from across the country. Meetings are by video; documents move through a secure portal; signatures are electronic. Our office in Byron Center, Michigan is open Monday through Friday for clients who prefer to sit down in person.
We take on a limited number of new planning relationships each year, and each one begins with one of our tax planning specialists — Jason Kuennen, who founded the practice, leads strategy and review across the team rather than taking on new clients directly. Every relationship starts with a conversation about fit. The two things we will always tell you plainly: whether the planning fee is likely to pay for itself in your situation, and whether we are the right firm to do it.
Start with a fit conversation.
Thirty minutes, your most recent return, and the decisions you have coming up.
