Tax planning for Grand Rapids and West Michigan households.

A year-round tax planning firm based in Byron Center, just south of Grand Rapids. Most clients work with us by video from across the country — but West Michigan is home, and our office is open Monday through Friday.

Who we work with

Households whose decisions move the tax bill

A vest, an exercise, a rental purchase, a business with real profit.

We are deliberately not a high-volume tax shop. Each client works with a named tax planning specialist who models decisions before they happen, builds a full-year projection before December 31, and prepares the returns afterward.

  • Equity compensation. RSUs, ISOs, NSOs and ESPP shares, including the RSU withholding gap and the AMT on ISO exercises. See Stock Options & Equity Compensation.
  • Rentals and lakeshore short-term rentals. Cost segregation, bonus depreciation, the seven-day short-term rental rule and material participation, planned before you buy or place a property in service. See Real Estate.
  • Business owners. S corporation elections, reasonable salary, partnership returns and the personal planning that goes with them.
  • Year-end decisions. Estimated payments, withholding, charitable timing, retirement contributions and loss harvesting, decided with a projection in front of you instead of after the year closes.
Local rules

Michigan and city rules we plan around

  • Michigan income tax is a flat 4.25% for the 2026 tax year, so every additional dollar of income is taxed at the same state rate. Federal planning does most of the heavy lifting, but state tax belongs in every projection.
  • Grand Rapids city income tax is 1.5% for residents and 0.75% for nonresidents on income earned in the city. Moving into or out of the city, or splitting work days between Grand Rapids and home, changes what you owe and what should be withheld.
  • A rental is not your homestead. Michigan’s principal residence exemption applies to the home you live in, not to a rental or short-term rental, so the property tax on an investment property belongs in the purchase math alongside the income tax benefits.

Who you will work with: every new relationship starts with one of our tax planning specialists, three of whom are CPAs. Business owners work with our business-returns CPA; equity compensation and real estate clients are matched with a specialist who works those situations every week. Meet them on our Team page.

Questions

Common questions

Do I need to live in West Michigan to work with you?
No. About nine in ten clients work with us remotely from across the country. Local clients can meet in person at our Byron Center office.

Do you only prepare tax returns?
No. We are a planning firm first. Return preparation is offered to planning clients, prepared by the same people who did the planning.

What does it cost?
Planning retainers start at $100 a month and individual return preparation starts at $500. Our Pricing page has a calculator.

When should I start?
Before the decision, not after it. The most valuable planning happens before a vest, an exercise, a property purchase or year-end.

Start with a complimentary tax projection

New clients start with a complimentary tax projection and a 30-minute conversation with one of our tax planning specialists, in person in Byron Center or by video.
